From a steep ridge in the newly-awarded Alisos Canyon AVA, the Nolan Ranch has an incredibly diverse terroir that’s loaded with limestone and fossils. Of their 105 acres of planted grapevines, a mere 0.88 acres are planted to the rare Counoise cuttings from Beaucastel, which the Perrin's consider “the grape of the future” in their southern climate given its natural acidity, good freshness and aromatics.
We vinified our 2021 Counoise in whole bunches, which alters the aromas but also increases the pH in the finished wine. While not something you can taste, this alters the mouthfeel and gives a certain “glou glou” quality, which might be roughly translated from the French as, “get out the straws.”
