When the "R" months roll in I definitely get a hankerin' for oysters on the half shell, washed down with a crisp, clean, Loire Valley Sancerre. Pelle's 2022 hits the mark, fresh, focused, and mineral driven, with bright acidity and zippy citrus fruit that make this wine the perfect seafood companion.
Good ole' Ernest Hemmingway summed it up best: “As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.” - Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast
Domaine Pellé is a fourth generation family estate run by the talented and hard-working Paul-Henry Pellé. The winery was officially started in the 1950s, though earlier generations of the Pellé family had produced wine even before then, selling barrels of wine to local Brasseries as far as Brouges in the early 20th century. Paul-Henry's grandfather, in fact, played an instrumental role in the establishment of the appellation, and lobbied hard to include "Morogues" on the label, which he felt essential since it is unique in its high percentage of kimmeridgian soils.
Pelle's four hectares are planted in ‘Caillotes’ soils that are pebbly clay and limestone, and produce beautifully fine wines with great consistency. This aromatic Sancerre mixes citrus and floral notes underpinned by lovely minerality. We are thrilled to add a Pellé Sancerre to our lineup of racy and electric Menetou-Salon from their home village of Morogues.
Fourth-generation Paul-Henry Pellé organically farms 40 hectares of vines in the kimmeridgian-centric village of Morogues in the appellation of Menetou-Salon. The property is planted to 1/3 Pinot Noir and 2/3 Sauvignon Blanc, both of which thrive in these lauded soils
Like the top wines from Chavignol, Pellé wines drink well on release, but also have the power and precision to age beautifully for 10-15 years, often longer in top vintages.
