Recently we had the pleasure to spend some time tasting with winemaker/owner Diana Lenzi of Fattoria di Petroio, a beautiful Tuscan estate with a family history that goes back generations. Given the fact that it’s International Women’s Day, the timing could not have been better.
She told us how she took over the family winery when she was in her young 20’s, coming from a career in Rome as a top tier Chef but with little knowledge of farming or winemaking. No easy task in two male dominated professions, especially 20 years ago! Despite the challenges, and against the opinion of just about every one who told her she would fail, Diana has succeeded beyond all expectations.
She has tackled the job with passion, patience and insatiable curiosity to learn and understand the nuances of the property and its wines, with a firm belief in the potential of the estate’s superb climate and stony galestro soils. Today she is making world class wines.
We tasted a number of them, all the up to her Gran Selezione DOCG 2015 ($100 per bottle), every one superb. But it was the Chianti Classico 2018 that truly captured our hearts and palates. Classically styled with a majority of Sangiovese and a little Colorino and Malvasia Nero for spice, depth, and complexty, (no international blending grapes here!) It is simply stunning and a joy to drink!
It’s fermented in concrete and then matured in neutral tonneau (large, old barrels), resulting in an elegant, fine-boned, complex Chianti with deep dark and red cherry fruit, spice, leather, and earth into a long, lingering finish.
My advice? Do yourself a huge favor and buy in six or twelve bottles of this fantastic Chianti Classico - you will love it! Cheers, Chris
