99 Point Value Score, Chris Cree MW
***** FIVE STAR WINE Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
Let’s start by saying that this wine is one of my favorite white Burgundy bargains every year ever. Not exactly “cheap” but a screaming bargain when you figure is about the same price as a decent Sonoma Chardonnay. It earns its 99 point Cree Wine Value score because value is relative, and this drinks like $100 Meursault, at half the price. Read on to find out why…
And it’s not just “ordinary” Bourgogne Blanc, which can come from grapes anywhere in the entire Burgundy Appellation. The Bourgogne Côte d’Or, a new designation added in 2017, indicates that the wine must come from one of the 40 villages in Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, in this case, Meursault.
And this wine has a serious pedigree. It is made by one of Burgundy’s brightest talents, Remi Jobard, whose 1er Meursaults are now topping $200 per bottle. It is made from 100% certified organic Chardonnay grapes grown in six parcels in Meursault, directly below the village. “Vieilles Vignes” means old vines, in this case 40+ years old. It is from the superb 2022 vintage, perhaps the best white Burg year since 2017 in a sereies of very good years.
It is fermented with indigenous yeast, and aged in 50% barrique (15% new) and 50% in large older foudre. It’s finished in stainless steel for 6 months before bottling. The entire focus here is in capturing the amazing terroirs of this special place in the heart of Burgundy, and I can safely say mission accomplished!
The result is a Bourgogne Blanc that’s better than many producers Village Meursault, at half the price. This year, after getting just a few cases of the frost devastated 2021 vintage, we actually have just enough for an email offer. In short if you LOVE great white Burgundy like I do, this is a must buy.
