94 Points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent - "The 2012 Leoville Barton has a medium to deep brick color. It wafts effortlessly out of the glass with evocative scents of boysenberry, juicy black plums, and créme de cassis followed by earthy, minerally suggestions of iron ore, pencil lead and charcoal. The medium bodied palate ffers a frim, grainy texture and acidity to counter the taut blackk fruit and earthy nuances, finnishing long and energetic."
Enjoy a classic, mature Left Bank Bordeaux from one of my all-time favorite Châteaux, Leoville Barton. Year after year solid Second Growth quality, yet they have kept pricing in check, offering terrific value to boot. When fellow MW Lisa Perrotti Brown recently featured a vertical retrospective of the Chateau's wines, to me the 2012 stood out as the absolute winner in terms of bang for the buck.
Sure the 2020 racked up 98 points, but it needs a decade or more in the cellar and it's $20-30 more per bottle. The 2009, also 98 points is great, but it's $200 per bottle. For me the sweet spot is right here, a beautiful, ready to drink Saint Julien direct from the Château in perfect condition for under $100. Can't miss!
Dense ruby/purple, with cassis licorice and forest floors notes in the aromatics, Léoville-Barton’s 2012 is a relatively big, rich, masculine style of wine. This full-bodied wine needs 5-8 years of cellaring and should evolve easily for 25-30 years.
