The story of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is amazing - first planted there in 1969 at Matua by Ross Spence in Waimauku, West Auckland, it has been off to the races ever since. Marlborough came next in 1973, and Cloudy Bay but it on the map. No other country’s wine production is so intertwined with just one grape. This is a second wine from Babich, a winery that predates Sauvignon Blanc in NZ by half a century, tracing its roots back to 1916.
The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, an absolute steal, leads off with plenty of gooseberry notes followed by hints of citrus and tropical fruits. Lovely and refreshing on the palate, with green apple notes and another layer of tropical fruits. Simply beautiful from start to finish, delivered at a price that won’t break the bank. Pair it with mild fish, shellfish, salads and all on its own! Cheers, Chris
