Subsoil Description

Calling all Cabernet lovers! Finding good Cabernet in the under $20 range has become something akin to chasing unicorns - but we've found one! If you are looking for a great Napa Cab alternative that won't break the bank this is your wine. This beautiful Washington State Cabernet leads right off the bat with deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruit, baking spices, earth, mocha, currant, and plum notes.

It follows up on the palate with mouth filling fruit, with tannins that are soft and supple, framing a dense fruit center and supporting the wine through the long finish. It is a succulent blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 12% Syrah grown in the winery's acclaimed Estate vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills. It's aged 12 months in a combination of French & American oak with about 35% new and 65% neutral, adding a lovely complex hint of vanilla and spice on the nose and palate without overpowering the wine. This is simply a lot of wine for the money, classy and polished and way over delivering for its modest price.

This wine’s roots go back 20,000 years ago when the cataclysmic Missoula floods deposited sediment deep into the rich subsoils of Washington State’s Columbia Basin. These soils, matched with central Washington’s sunny dry climate (almost all the rain falls on the west side of the Cascades - sorry Seattle!), with warm days and cool nights makes the Horse Heaven Hills AVA a perfect place for Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen.

Top names like Quilceda Creek and Leonetti will set you back a couple hundred dollars per bottle. But there is also great value in Washington, and Mercer Winery’s Subsoil Cabernet, from grapes grown in the Horse Heaven AVA offers tons of sunny, rich, Cabernet character at a bargain price.

It leads off with aromas of ripe red and dark fruit, baking spices, and earth tinged warm fruit. Tannins are soft and supple, framing a dense fruit center and supporting the wine through the long finish. Highest Recommandation!
