One of my favorite producers in Serralunga d’Alba, the Schiavenzas produce authentic, traditional Barolos that capture the very essence of their great Cru vineyards. I've tasted at the winery, (they have an incredible trattoria if you are ever there!), and had Walter here in the states on several occasions, and I have always loved their wines!
The winery was founded in 1956, and solid, classic, old school, and structured are words that come to mind when tasting many a wine from barrel and bottle. But today the wines are better than they have ever been. Without losing their Serralunga roots and traditional nature, there is another level of class, elegance and polish that works in tandem with the Serralunga character, and I absolutely love today's offer.
In this case, patience was of the essence. After the exceptional 2016 vintage I chose in large part to sit out the 2017s, buying a few mainly for the wine list due to their approachability, and dabbled in the outstanding 2018s. But mainly I waited for the magnificent 2019s that are just showing up now. It was worth the wait!
Furthermore, the Barolo Perno is another wine that was worth waiting for, a debut release for this wine in the US and it is an instant classic. Barolo from Serralunga is known for being structured, focused and intense, with aromatic dried cherry, dried herbs, moderate plus tannins, and a long warm, lingering finish, and this wine offers classic Serralunga character at an incredible price. It virtually begs for veal, cinghiale (wild boar), pork chops or roasted loin, pasta with bolognese sauce, and all kinds of hearty fall/winter fare. You can enjoy it now with a decanting, and it will age and improve for 5-10 years at least!
Serralunga is the home to some of the best in the game - Massolino, Giacomo Conterno (their Barolo Francia is about $200 per bottle!), Cappellano, Fontanafredda, and more. But Schiavenza remains just under the radar, offering a beautiful insight to this great region's style at a fraction of the cost.

Schiavenza Description

“If you are looking for a classic Serralunga Barolo that offers structure for long-term cellaring, the wines from Schiavenza are ideal candidates. Traditional in the winemaking, each Barolo is an excellent representation of its site, from the Serralunga comune bottling to Broglio, Ceretta and Prapò. The wines are rugged in nature, but never aggressive, and are beautifully made with great restraint and harmony." - Tom Hyland, Forbes' Best 25 Producers of Barolo
“This is a strong set of wines from Schiavenza. The wines come across as better balanced than in the past, with a more refined approach to extraction....the wines appear to be moving in a very positive direction." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“I had not tasted the wines of Schiavenza in a few years and am impressed by the strides made in recent vintages." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Wine Spectator: 94 Points

94 Points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator - “Broad and rich, exhibiting plum, cherry, menthol and spicy oak flavors. Nicely balanced and smooth, without sacrificing any underlying structure. Everything comes together on the spicy finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 298 cases made, 150 cases imported.”
