This wine earns its 98 Point Cree Value score for the simple reason that it’s a dead ringer for Puligny Montrachet - a wine that will now run you anywhere from the low $60s to hundreds of dollars per bottle. Beautiful aromas of ripe orchard fruit, hints of pear, peach and apple with just a hint of oak are followed on the palate by Puligny-like minerality, richness and focus. So if you like great white Burgundy but not the price don't delay! Snap up six or so bottles of this amazing overachiever!
If you love great white Burgundy but not the price we have the answer! One of the rules for finding great value is look for the top producers in great vintages and buy their entry level wines.
Another rule is to seek out wines from vineyards right next to the best (and most expensive) sites that are half the price - and buy them! While Bourgogne Blanc can come from anywhere in all of Burgundy, this one comes from prime parcels in and around the prized (and expensive!) village of Puligny-Montrachet. This wine checks both of these boxes in spades!
As Burgundy prices continue to soar we continue to scour the market for affordable wines that won’t break the budget. The lastest is this unbelievable white Burgundy from top-tier producer Jean-Marc Boillot.
In short this guy’s lineage is nothing less than big time Burgundy superstars. His maternal grandfather was Etienne Sauzet, and his other grandfather is Henri Boillot, from where he runs his own Domain today.
As Jean-Marc entered his parents business, he was of the younger generation in Burgundy who at the time, the 1970s & 1980s, saw room for improvement in his family’s wines. He toed the line until 1984, when after vinifying 13 vintages at his family’s domaine, he walked out in protest.
He went to Olivier Leflaive and worked there for the next four vintages, while also making a tiny amount of his own wine from a small vineyard he had acquired. His wines so impressed his grandfather (Henri Boillot), that he gave half of his vineyard holdings to Jean-Marc and Domain JM Boillot was born. He also inherited some prime vineyards from the late late Etienne Sauzet - not a bad way to get started!
But the real deal here in this specific wine is the vineyard sourcing, with grapes grown in two tiny parcels. One lies in the commune of Puligny Montrachet (Lieu-dit Les Bergeries), the other in the village of Volnay (Lieu-dit Les Longs Bois).
One swirl of the glass and a quick taste and you’ll see the big-time Puligny connection with its lovely compact, ripe fruit, underlying minerality and superb balance, focus and length. This drinks like an $80 Puligny-Montrachet, (Sauzet’s Village level is $90-100, JM Boillot’s 1er Crus are well over $100!), but you can get Puligny-like style and quality today for around $30!
We loved it so much we bought it all - but even then it’s still quite limited. Open to taste all week, six bottle price expires August 11th. Cheers!
