I have been selling (and enjoying!) the beautiful white wines made by the Almondo family in Piedmont’s Roero region for decades - particularly for their crisp, clean focus, hints of orchard fruit, and food friendly ambiance.
The wine is made from 100% Arneis, a grape that was nearly extinct a few decades ago until it was revived by a few wineries dedicated to keeping Piedmont’s indigenous and historic grape varieties alive.
Grapes for this favorite spring white are grown in the Almondo family’s "Sparse" vineyard at an elevation of about 1,100 feet in the Piedmont Hills of Roero. There are three types of soils - mainly sand, limestone, and clay, in various proportions, which combined with the elevation of about 1,100 feet creates wines with amazing vibrant fruit matched by lively focus and acidity.
Harvest is by hand, and the grapes are crushed and then have a 12-hour cold maceration before the start of fermentation, which is entirely in stainless steel tanks for 7 months to keep the wine bright and lively.
Like drinking liquid spring, it pairs well with sushi and all sorts of mild seafood and shellfish, plus salads, asparagus, linguini with white clam sauce, cheeses, charcuterie, and all on its own on a warm spring or summer afternoon. For sheer quality to value it easily earns its 98 point score - stock up now and enjoy with a great price on three or more!
The Almondos have been making this delicious white since the 1970s, and with a new generation at the helm, they will hopefully be making it for decades to come - make it a tradition at your house too - Cheers! Chris Cree, Master of Wine
