This is pure, unadulterated old school Barolo from the granddaddy of all Barolo producers. Founded in 1761 (!) The winery pre-dates the unification of Italy as a country by 100 years!!

Anyway, this wine has a classic nose of dried cherry, dried rose petal and earth. It is fine tuned and classic on the palate with medium plus body, fairly supple tannins for a young Barolo, and a long warm mid-palate with dried red fruit notes. Old world without being rustic at all, this beautiful Barolo can be drunk now with a decanting, or over the next decade at least.

Nothing fancy here, just excellent terroir with the grapes selected from grapes coming from five of the most prestigious vineyards of the Barolo area: Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Fossati, Liste, San Pietro delle Viole, a traditional way of making Barolo.

Fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts for about 12 days in concrete tanks, followed by submerged cup maceration for 30 days. The wine is aged for 4 years in Slavonian oak casks (4500L).

James Suckling: 94 Points

“Aromas of ripe strawberries with bark, cedar and hazelnuts. Some meaty undertones, too. Full-bodied with a tight palate, but opulent fruit oozes through at the end. Shows lots of promise for the straight-up Barolo. Try after 2023.”
