Flavio Roddolo Description

Flavio Roddolo is one of the last remaining truly genuine wine-growers in Piedmont. The 20,000 bottles he produces annually in the Bricco Appiani hill outside of Monforte are the work of an artisan deeply attached to his land, who knows and respects each one of his vines. The 6 hectares of vineyards have not been chemically treated for 40 years. Roddolo uses only indigenous yeasts, does not clarify nor filters. The vines, planted on calcareous/clay soil, are 15 to 70 years old. His wines are a reflection of the Monforte terroir and of the man who makes them: they are introverted, brooding and intense, but with patience they reveal a rich, unique and rewarding personality.

Flavio Roddolo winery sits on top of the Bricco Appiani hill, surrounded by his vineyards. This hill is just outside the Barolo DOCG confines. He has less than 2 acres of 40 years old vines just a mile away, in one of the most prestigious cru's of Monforte, called Ravera or Coste di Monforte, From there he produces around 3,000 bottles annually. The grapes are fermented with only native yeasts and undergo a long maceration in large wood barrels, 30 days or more. The wine rests in wood for more than 2 years and then is moved to steel tanks, then back to wood over the course of several years.. Through this racking process his wines are filtered. Roddolo believes in patience over cellar techniques and tricks for his wines, that is why he releases his wines much later than most of his colleagues. The wine is bottled, without any further filtration, just a couple of months before being released.
I am pasting what my website says, and a picture I took of Roddolo in his Ravera, Coste dei Monforte, vineyard.
