In 2004 Ester Nin bought a 3 hectare parcel of old vine Garnatxa Pelluda and Carinyena in Mas d’En Caçador– the famed vineyard on the border between Porrera and Gratallops. At 650 meters above sea level, this site is one of the highest in the Priorat and its north-facing slopes are buttressed by ancient stone terraces providing a footing for the vines on this rocky, treacherous, pure llicorella soil. Garnatxa Pelluda, or hairy Grenache, is lighter in color than Garnatxa Negre as well as being fresher and spicier. Nit de Nin is hand harvested, fermented by indigenous yeasts and aged in 500L demi-muid and foudre.
It has a lively, exotic bouquet of orange sorbet, kirsch and a touch of liquorice that is immediately captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, layers of ripe, lascivious red fruit leading to a sumptuous, mineral-rich finish with a subtle hint of oxtail on the aftertaste.
The nose of the 2021 Nit de Nin Mas d’en Caçador is really different, with a savory condition, reminiscent of cured sausage (Catalan "fuet" dry sausage), herbal, fresh and floral, with some notes of meat and blood. It was produced with the grapes from the ancient vineyard and is a blend of 75% Garnacha (Red and Peluda) and 28% Cariñena. It fermented in 3,200-liter oak foudres with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 225- and 300-liter barrels for 18 months. It has moderate ripeness, a medium-bodied palate with 13.5% alcohol, purity of flavors and fine tannins, a soft mouthfeel and mellow acidity. 2,401 bottles were filled in April 2023.
The 2021 Nit De Nin Mas d'En Caçador is a blend of 72% Garnatxa and Garnatxa Peluda with 28% Carignan, sourced from Porrera in Priorat. Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged for 18 months in barrel, this wine is highly expressive, revealing aromas of violets, roses, grapefruit, blood and undergrowth. Dry, lean and juicy, it offers a talc-like texture on the palate, contributing to a long-lasting mouthfeel. This is a modern interpretation of Priorat, showcasing a light, ethereal expression contrasted by deep, enduring flavors—a beautiful wine.
