This is simply an amazing wine that you should not miss! It is made from a small parcel of 50 year Trousseau formerly owned and farmed by the legendary Jacques Puffeney. Today under the guidance of Burgundian cult producer Guillaume d'Angerville, this wine is crafted with the utmost respect to the traditions and ethos of M. Puffeney.

It’s pale to medium ruby hue, but its light color belies this wine’s brilliant focus and intensity, combined with an ethereal elegance and purity. It bursts from the glass with cool cranberry, sour cherry, red fruits and a slightly earth tinged note - more akin to Pinot Noir than anything else. Yet it has its own character - a crunchy, succulent and intense core of red cherry, sour cherry and cranberry follow through on the palate, supported by moderate tannins, lively minerality and acidity, with that rocky earth note mingling with the its sweet and sour red fruits  into the long, brilliant finish. Truly a special wine, and the perfect homage to the old master Jacques Puffeney. Don’t miss out on this bucket list wine, only a few cases on offer!

Geek wine Sunday is back and again we are in the foothills of the French Alps, again at the esteemed Marquis d'Angerville’s outpost in the Jura. We featured Pelican's Chardonnay a few weeks back - a stunning wine that was the impetus for this multi-generational, cult status Burgundy producers foray into the wines of this obscure region. Served blind in a Paris Michelin starred restaurant in 2007, it led Guillaume d’Angerville clan to begin a search for vineyards in the Jura.

He first was able to lease the Chateau Chavanes in Montigny-les-Arsures, which gave him access to 5 hectares of biodynamically farmed vines replanted ten years prior by the former owner. He also obtained access to five more hectares of vines never touched by chemicals  that were previously farmed by Jean-Marc Brignot.

But in 2014 Guillaume hit the jackpot when Jacques Puffeney announced he would be retiring, allowing Guillaume to take over 4 hectares of his vineyards.

And that is where this wine is grown, a spectacular single vineyard akin to a top tier Cru Burgundy, albeit one that no one has ever heard of! It is 100% Trousseau, aka Bastardo and Merenzao, an ancient grape variety that is believed to have its origins in this eastern region of France (or perhaps Portugal where it has been grown for centuries.)

Thus parcel is located in Montigny-les-Arsures, the top terroir for the Trousseau grape, and is the same legendary vineyard where Puffeney farmed and made his Berenger Trousseau.

The soils here are alluvial and silt over gray marls, just stony enough to allow for good drainage, perfect for Trousseau. The vines are over 50 years old and have a south and southwest exposition. Harvest is manual, winemaking is non-interventional, and the wine is aged in 228L and 350L barrels with no new oak.
