“An amazingly pure Pinot with hints of red and dark cherry fruit, a bit of spice box and earth, medium plus body with a core succulent rich fruit supported by perfect acidity and moderate, fine grained tannins. It’s got way more than just a little Pommard attitude and character from its roots in that special site. With Pommard from Boulanger almost $100, this delivers it at just over half the price!
The finish is long and satisfying and portends a drinking window that starts now with its beautifully primary freshness, and extends out for at least another 5-6 years or longer." Chris Cree MW
In Vinous Media’s 2020 report on Burgundy Neal Martin wrote “It is amazing how Génot-Boulanger has come out of nowhere in the last two or three years.” This is a comment I wholeheartedly agree with. I only wish I could get more wine from this amazing estate!
News travels fast among burgundy fanatics, and despite Genot-Boulanger's recent rise to the top of the Burgundy firmament the rest of the world (or at least those that are obsessed with Burgundy) has caught on, with the wines selling out on release often before they even hit the dock.
Fortunately I was an early adapter, falling in love with the authentic, terroir driven nature of fourth generation Aude and Guillaume Lavollée’s wines. I get decent allocations, but they are by no means available in abundance. So I was thrilled to lock up enough of the 2021 Bourgogne Rouge to actually do an offer - with the caveat that this may go fast!
This wine comes from selected 60 year old vine parcels in Pommard, with carefully selected grapes and extremely low yields, native yeast fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 20 to 25 days. Extractions are always gentle with the number of punchdowns and pumping over adjusted to the conditions of the vintages and the terroir. The Pinot Noirs are aged for 12 months in oak barrels, with around 20% new oak before being aged for another six months in vats before bottling. The red wines are neither fined nor filtered.
