Tim Atkin 96 Points - "This is quite the package with its bold, über-fragrant nose of baked apple generosity elegantly accented by a halo of brown spice. Initially broad and powerful on the attack, an assertive and racy acidity transforms the mouthfeel. The smashed orchard fruits, dried bouquet and wet stone notes head into the long, vigorous and refreshing finish. It is a rather crunchy style of Bâtard and an excellent showing for these vines planted across a 50-year span from the 1930s to the 1980s."

Jancis Robinson 18.5 Points (out of 20) - "More smoky reduction on the nose and more obvious weight and power than the Blain-Gagnard Criots. A delicious grand cru with reserves of power, concentration and notes of intense, low-yielding fruit. Savoury and mineral, stony character to finish. Notable and memorable. Has a long future ahead. Classic top-tier white burgundy."

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Description

  • The historic Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has its origin in the fine Gagnard-Delagrange holdings of fifty years ago, as the vineyards hail from the marriage of Richard Fontaine to Jacques Gagnard’s oldest daughter Laurence Gagnard in 1982. Today, the domaine is managed by the intuitive and graceful Céline Fontaine.
  • The heart and soul of the domaine are their Chassagne-Montrachets, of which they own a fine clutch of premier crus and vines also in the grand crus of Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Montrachet itself.
  • The style of the wines is intense, deep and complex. They are Chassagnes that start out as classically balanced and accessible, but always with fine expressions of terroir and the underlying structure to age gracefully as well.

Vinous: 94-96 Points

The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has an almost clinical bouquet with more penetration than the Criots served alongside. The medium-bodied palate has fine tension, but there is a real delicacy about this Bâtard with a very persistent, controlled finish and hints of white peach on the aftertaste. Wonderful.
