Love Great White Burgundy But Not the Price? For white Burgundy lovers there is simply nothing like the heights the chardonnay grape can achieve when planted in the near perfect terroirs surrounding the great wine villages of Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet, Corton and Meursault. But this superb quality often comes with a pretty steep price tag. What’s a Burgundy lover to do? We have the answer! The trick is to look for the Bourgogne level wines from the very top estates, and today’s offer comes from none other than the esteemed Domaine de Montille.
Crisp, mineral, and focused, with a tight core of classic Burgundian Chardonnay fruit and just a hint of oak, this drinks like a wine twice its price!. Stock up now before the price increases and shortages hit white Burgundy supplies!
Founded nearly 300 years ago, this property in the Cote de Beaune has been run by the de Montille family since the 1940s, and they have built it into one of the best in the region for both red and white wines, from Bourgogne Rouge and Blanc to Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne.
And while they make a very good regular bottling of “Bourgogne Blanc”, the Bourgogne Blanc “Le Clos” (de Château de Puligny) is rather something special! It comes from grapes grown in a five hectare parcel of walled in vines (required to be called a “Clos”), that sits directly in front of the famed Château de Puligny, right on the border of the Puligny Montrachet appellation.
If you need more encouragement to buy in on this beautiful wine, there is a looming shortage of white Burgundy due to freeze and other weather issues in the 2021 vintage. As a result yields were down dramatically - up to 80%, 90% and more for some growers! These is just every little wine coming in the next year, and what is left in the market has been quickly going up in price. This is a great time to stock up on a great, reasonably priced wine and take care of your white Burgundy needs for the next year or so.
Etienne de Montille calls this wine "mon chou chou", a term of endearment meaning "my favorite", and as the the team at importer Polaner Selections says “ it is a nervier step up from the Bourgogne Blanc and clearly portrays the qualities of its home of Puligny. Truly one of the great values of this prime village.” We couldn’t agree more. Stock up on this gem while it lasts!
