Cottanera Description

Last October I had the good fortune to sail around the Island of Sicily for a week, visiting several wineries and conducting wine classes on one of the most beautiful ships I have ever seen. One of the wines I discovered on that magical trip as we sailed through the Straits of Messina - Etna looming through the clouds to our west, was this delicious red wine from the Cambria family.
No hype, no big scores, (except from me!) just a honest delicious red from the sunny slopes of Sicily's Mount Etna. It's a blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio from Contrada Calderara and Diciasettesalme vineyards, two top sites. The grapes are grown at 720 meters above sea level, with warm days and cool nights, in soils that consist of mineral-rich lava, clay, and alluvial sediment.
The fruit is handpicked and destemmed, followed by maceration over 20-25 days, fermentation then takes place in stainless steel with frequent pump overs and punch downs employed to elicit maximum expression of fruit and terroir.
The result is a round, medium plus bodied red with ripe red and dark fruits, a very slight complex smokey note, nice minerality and soft supple tannins. Equally at home with burgers, grilled or roasted chicken or pork, plus all kinds of Italian classics from pizza to lasagna, the Perryville Burger, and more. In stock now and ready for pick up.
Stop in tomorrow, try a bottle at retail price (Wine Wednesday pricing), pair it up with our Rabbit Ragu over pappardelle (new on the menu) and you will want to buy a case to go! Cheers! Chris

Chris Cree MW - Overall Score: 90 Points

Even in the grand scheme of things I would give this terrific red a 90 point rating against other wines. Lovely fruit and balance, supple tannins, easy drinking, and classic Etna character make it a big winner. Cheers! Chris Cree
