The Clos Apalta 2015 is a truly outstanding Chilean red wine, racking up a perfect 100 Points from James Suckling. Problem is, that as good as it is, it sells for an average of $145 online. Yesterday I got the opportunity to taste the second label of this iconic Chilean winery and was totally blown away. And then I saw the price and bought all that was available!
With a few years now in the bottle, perfectly stored in the winery’s cool cellars, this wine is simply amazing! Deep dark ruby hue, incredibly aromatic on the nose with red and dark earthy fruit and a hint of well integrated oak, followed by hints of sandalwood, spice box, mocha, tobacco, leather and dried herbs. On the palate it is seamless, refined and utterly classy. Silky fine grained tannins support deeply layered and complex fruit, again with just the right touch of integrated oak, a warm rich core of fruit, and a long lingering finish. Wow! This drinks magnificently now, and should do so for 5-8 more years at least.
At less than half the price of the 100 point Grand Vin, this is an absolute bargain, with much of the class and character of its big brother, at about the same price as an average California Cabernet.
The second wine in a true Bordeaux sense, the 2015 Le Petit Clos is a wine of structure and good balance in the manner of their 2001 and 2006, concentrated and powerful vintages. It's a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Carmenère and 4% Petit Verdot from younger slope vineyards and Cabernet Sauvignon from Clos Apalta. The wine is produced in the same way as the grand vin, but it has less oak and has quite a lot of character from the Carmenère. I find this fresher and less oaky than the wines I have in mind from the past, with more elegance within their style. 36,667 bottles were filled in September 2017.
