Wine Advocate 95 Points - “2020 is an exceptional vintage here, the finest they have ever produced….There is precision, elegance and
balance, the three words that define the vintage. All the wines are very good value, but this is a steal.” Wine Advocate, April 2022
You can read the full review below, but this glowing praise from The Wine Advocate, and its track record over the last few years, pretty much sum up just how consistently good this spectacular wine from the sunny southeast region of Jumilla is.
We were blown away by the elegant, polished balance of this wine, especially from a region so far south. I have visited there (had the best paella I have ever had!). The rocky, poor soils and warm sunny days that are contrasted by cool, clear nights in this high semi desert environment at about 2250 feet of altitude allow perfect ripening while maintaining beautiful freshness and acidity.
Food friendly and versatile, it has beautiful dark and red cherry fruit notes, hints of spice, supple tannins, and balance that allow it to pair great with anything from roasted or grilled chicken, roasted Turkey, game birds, duck, pork, veal, and beef, or even a pizza. This will be open to taste starting tomorrow, but is in stock and ready to roll! A perfect wine for the fall season - Cheers, Chris
The perfect Mediterranean vintage produced an outstanding Garnacha. The 2020 El Molar fermented with 35% full clusters and matured in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter foudres for one year. The wine is very young and tender; it feels more delicate despite having a little more alcohol than the 2019 (it's 15%) and with a slightly lower pH (3.49). It's super aromatic, extroverted and expressive, floral, elegant and complex. There is great balance, and the wine feels fresher and less ripe; it's refreshing and has a core of minerality and super fine tannins with pungent flavors. There is precision, elegance and balance, the three words that define the vintage. All the wines are very good value, but this is a steal. 40,000 bottles were filled in March 2022.
I tasted the 2019 and 2020 vintages from Casa Castillo, the leading producer in Jumilla and the Mediterranean and among the best in Spain. 2020 was a classic Mediterranean vintage there, with a rainy spring and very dry and hot summer. Budding and harvest happened on normal dates. A rain of 40 liters per square meter at the end of August changed everything, slowing down ripening, raising the relative humidity of the environment, lowering night temperatures and directing the harvest toward excellence. Their 2020s represent the finest wines they have produced since they started in 1991. Even the musts showed balance and elegance, and that continued throughout the fermentation and upbringing of the wines that are elegant and fine, with less color and extraction than normal but with great character and depth. It has the Casa Castillo style, austere, mineral with an absence of fruit, with depth and character. Furthermore, all the labels also changed to a more stylish image with the 2020 vintage. 2020 is an exceptional vintage here, the finest they have ever produced.
