This 100% Nebbiolo from the Carema Classico DOC is a great contender in this Italian face-off. Based at the foothills of the Alps in Piedmont, Carema is home to outstanding Nebbiolo wines, so it’s quite an honor to find this wine among the top 10 most highly rated Carema wines (based on critic scores).

Tasting Notes: Carema Classico has one of the most beautiful colors in all of the world in wine—palest garnet with a very orange edge. The nose is subtle and fresh, with ripe strawberry, blueberry, dried roses, potpourri, clove, chalk, and nutmeg. Overall, it is a lighter, more mineral driven expression of Nebbiolo. There is also very little wood influence, so in a way it is like drinking the purest expression of the grape.  Aged for 18 months, with 12 months in large oak or chestnut barrels. It’s not a rosé, but can be enjoyed chilled as well as cellar temperature.

Carema is a little hamlet in the Alps in a beautiful sunny valley north west of Piedmont. It marks the divide between Piedmont and the Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta) and has produced a Nebbiolo so unique that it was granted its own DOC in 1967. The place is majestic and the vineyards unique. Rock terraces that are hundreds of years old are topped with stone pillars called Pilun that support the pergola systems on which the vines are grown. Harvesting at this incline is carried out by hand with ladders and baskets. One has to appreciate places where traditions and wine culture run so deep!

Pairing: Roast meat, game, red meat, ravioli, risotto, polenta with cheese, meat rolls, cured meats, tomato-based dishes  and medium-ripe cheeses.
