Far North Spirits - 6 Year Old Hazelet Bottle-in-bond Single Varietal Straight Rye Whiskey

This is a single varietal rye, Hazelet, that is aged 6 years and bottled-in-bond (50% abv). Tons of unique character here to list: stone fruit, spice, cereal, honey, oranges, dried tea leafs, cinnamon, toffee, caramel, the list goes on. Really wonderful gem here. 

Since 1917, the Swanson family has farmed the same plot of land in the Red River Valley. It's a thousand acres of rich, black soil that's perfect for growing heirloom corn and rye. The distillery, completed in 2013, is located on land that was originally used to grow wheat. Far North Spirits is the northernmost distillery in the continental United States, and its premium, heritage spirits draw inspiration from the unique culture and agricultural bounty of Minnesota. They are one of only a handful of estate distilleries in the country that also cultivate their own grains, and they're barely 25 miles from the Canadian border.

The northernmost distillery in the contiguous United States, Far North Spirits is making a name for itself in the farming, distillation and aging of single varietal whiskey. The great wines of the world are inextricably tied to the variety of the grapes from which they are made. However, for whiskeys, which are fermented and distilled from grains, that varietal information and the tie to the agriculture behind it is often severed. Why?
