Chris Cree MW - Value Score: 98 Points
From J.K. Carriere this delicious Willamette Valley bargain is classic Oregon Pinot. Medium plus in body, leading off on the nose with crushed dark and red cherry fruit that bursts onto the palate with supple, ripe and layered fruit, balancing soft acid and tannin, and beautiful, lingering finish.
It’s food friendly, versatile, and as crown pleasing as wine can be. Serve it with grilled or roasted meaty fish - salmon, grouper, halibut - roasted chicken or turkey, ham, lamb, burgers, duck, game birds and more! For more details read below, or click now to stock up for the holiday!
So why is this wine so good?
Mainly the commitment of owner founder Jim Prosser who hews to a philosophy of non-interventional farming and winemaking designed to capture the very essence of the vineyards where he sources his grapes.
The Provocateur is sourced from some truly great sites, with older vines and a track record of making great wines. These include St. Dolores Estate (14 years), Gemini Vineyard (29 years), and Temperance Hill (42 years), mainly on classic volcanic and marine sedimentary soils and farmed with organic practices.
The grapes are vinified in small-lot wild yeast fermentations in open-top wood and stainless steel tanks. Limited pre-ferment maceration, followed by minimal, but targeted temperature and punch-down intervention.
Aging is 100% in barrel for one year in 19% new French oak. Racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
