One of the tricks I use when looking for the best wines at bargain prices is to go to great winemakers who are tops in their class and look for their least expensive wines. They simply aren't putting their name on the bottle if it isn't a great wine, even if it is under $20. It's just not worth ruining the reputation of their world class, 100 point Châteauneuf du Papes. And it's a matter of pride - great winemakers make great wines in part because they are passionate in everything they do.
The 2022 Janasse Mediterranee Rosé is a perfect example and a great encore performance after the delicious 2021 we sold last year! It's a blend of 70% Grenache, 30% Syrah, organically farmed, without pesticides, insecticides, or weedkillers, harvested by hand with sorting in the vineyard.
It's 50% rosé de saignée, where they let the lightly colored rosé wine bleed off the red wine tanks before fermentation, and the other 50% by direct press. Natural yeast fermentations, 3-4 months in tank et voila - summer in a bottle!
The result is everything you would want in a classic southern French rosé - affordable, delicious, refreshing, and dry. Hints of melon, strawberry, guava, and red fruits lead off on the nose and follow through on the palate. It's clean and bright, with lovely fresh acidity and focus. Perfect all on its own on a warm summer's eve, with salads, (especially a classic nicoise!), appetizers of all kinds, grilled veggies, charcuterie, all kinds of seafood, grilled shrimp, and so much more.
