Chris Cree MW - Value Score: 100 Points
“Deep, richly layered, and powerful, with round ripe tannins and loads of succulent dark fruit, this wine is $38 (plus shipping!) on the winery’s website. You can stock up this weekend for under $30 per bottle - Don’t miss it!”
With top California Cabernets often priced in the $100s per bottle, it is refreshing to see a spectacular value like this one from Calluna Vineyards.
We tasted it a few months back with founder/owner/winemaker David Jeffries, and while we loved the entire lineup, the CVC was the star of the show!
At $30 something per bottle this wine WAY overdelivers, with deep, dark, plush dark Cabernet fruit, a softer plummy mid palate from the Merlot, savory tones from the Cab Franc, and nuanced grace notes and complexities beyond its humble price from the addition of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Spark up the Barbie and drink this gem now and over the next 4-6 years at least!
37% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc,11% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec
